First aid - burns

In the event of a burn from a torch flame or hot metal, the following treatment should be carried out as soon as possible to limit the amount of skin damage:

  • Rapidly cool the burn with cold (but not ice-cold) running water
  • Remove any clothing or jewellery over the burnt area, unless it has become attached to the skin.
  • Keep the burn under the water for at least 10 minutes, or longer if the pain has not been relieved.
  • Place a layer of cling film over the burn, but do not wrap it around a limb.
  • If the burn is on a hand, it can be covered with a clean plastic bag.
  • If plastic is not available, then cover the burn with a lint free sterile dressing.
  • Do not put lotions, sprays, or butter on the burnt area.
  • Try to keep the limb raised to reduce swelling.
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to reduce the pain.
  • Call the emergency services or ask for medical advice if necessary.

For burns caused by chemicals such as acids:

  • Wearing protective gloves, remove any affected clothes
  • If the chemical is a powder, carefully brush it from the skin.
  • Rinse the burn with cool running water for at least 20 minutes.
  • Call the emergency services immediately.
