Glossary of Terms - T

Table

The largest facet on the top of a cut gemstone.

Tang

The slender prong at the back end of a file, intended as a means of attaching a handle.

Tap

Taps are cutting tools used for creating holes with screw threads around the inside.

Tempering

A process of heat treatment, used to increase the toughness of iron based alloys.

Third hand

A tool comprising of a pair of locking tweezers, a heavy stand, and a universal joint to join them together. This tool is used to help support pieces during soldering.

Thrumming

Traditional polishing technique where multiple threads impregnated with polishing compound are used to polish hard to reach areas.

Tin snips

Scissor like tools are sometimes also known as shears; they are hand tools used to cut sheet metal.

Titanium

Corrosion resistant metal with a shiny silver appearance. It has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal.

Triblet

A fine powdered rock used as a polishing compound.
