Glossary of Terms - S

Sandbag

A leather bag filled with sand used to support work during sinking or raising.

Scorper

A kind of fine chisel used in engraving.

Scriber

A hand tool used to mark lines on work prior to cutting.

Shank

The end of a drill bit gripped by the chuck of a drill, or the end of a file held in a handle.

Shot

Small pieces of steel used in a barrel polisher.

Silver

A soft, white precious metal. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, the rest is copper. Pure silver is known as fine silver.

Solder

A metal alloy used to join together pieces of metal, it must have a melting point below that of the work piece.

Soldering

In jewellery, silver soldering is done with a torch and is also known as brazing.

Sprue

A passage through which liquid metal is introduced into a mould.

Steel

An alloy made by combining iron and other elements (commonly carbon).

Stop out varnish

Used to selectively protect areas of a surface from the effects of a mordant during etching.

Sulphuric acid

Commonly used as in pickling solutions.

Swaging

A forging process in which the shape of an item is altered using a die called a swaging block.
