Glossary of Terms- R

Repoussé

A cold working process where punches and hammers are used to work on the reverse of the metal to form a raised design on the front.

Reticulation

A hot working process where the surface of metal is heated to melting point. This then produces a wrinkled texture as the base of the metal stays solid.

Ring clamp

A small wooden vice used to hold rings during stone setting or engraving.

Rivet

A permanent metal fastener that fits through a hole; it can be either a solid rivet, or formed from a tube. The enlarged heads of the rivet hold the metal surfaces together.

Rolling mill

A tool that passes metal sheet or wire between pressurised rollers. The extruded metal will be longer and thinner than the original. A rolling mill can also be used to form square or D shaped wire.

Rouge

A fine powdered polish used in the final stages of jewellery polishing.
