Paillons

Small chips of solder

Patina

A tarnish that forms on the surface of copper, bronze, sterling silver and similar metals. This can be created deliberately in order to highlight texture.

Pave setting

A stone setting in which many small stones are set closely together on the surface of a piece of jewellery.

Pendant motor

A motor used to drive rotary tools via a flexible shaft.

Pewter

A grey coloured, malleable metal alloy; traditionally 85-99% tin.

Pickle

A liquid used to clean oxidation and flux from metal. A solution of dilute sulphuric acid or sodium bisulfate is commonly used.

Piercing saw

A saw with a very thin blade that can easily cut complex shapes in sheet metal.

Pitch

A substance to hold metal in place during chasing or repoussé work. Pitch should be soft when heated, and will then cool and set to hold the metal firmly.

Planishing

A metalworking technique that involves finishing the surface by hammering the metal against a stake with a planishing hammer.

Platinum

A grey coloured, corrosion resistant precious metal.

Pumice

A volcanic rock. When ground to a fine powder, it can be used to clean metal after soldering.
