The Bench Peg

A bench peg is a wedge shaped block of wood that is mounted on the front edge of the jeweller's workbench. It is a multi functional rest, used for many processes such as filing, drilling, and sawing.

A keyhole shaped slot is usually cut into the front of the bench peg. This provides support for the work whilst also allowing free access with a piercing saw inside the keyhole shape. Over time, most jewellers will also create other minor grooves and slots in the surface of the peg to suit their indidual needs. The peg should be mounted to the bench with bolts or screws so that it can be replaced when the need arises.
