High quality files are a real investment, and should be treated with respect equal to any other tool. If the files are stored together or simply thrown into a tool box then the teeth will quickly become blunt or otherwise damaged. If looked after carefully, files can provide a lifetime of useful service.
Large files can be stored in a drawer with a partition between each one. Smaller files such as needle or escapement files can be stored in a small wallet with individual slots to prevent the files from rubbing against each other. Storing files in this manner will have the added benefit of making it easier to locate the correct file for a specific job. Keeping the files in enclosed storage will help to prevent rust; the fumes from a pickle pot can create enough condensation to form rust.
Files for jewellery will remain sharp for much longer if they are reserved for soft metals. When working on other projects involving harder metals such as steel, use other files reserved for this purpose.
Soft metals such as copper and silver can easily clog up the cutting teeth of a file. Use a wire brush occasionally to clear any debris from hand files. This makes the file more efficient and will prevent these particles from creating any further scratches on the surface of the metal. Brush across the file from one side to the other; brushing down the file will blunt the teeth.
