Filing Tips

  • Select the right size file for the job. A file has to be large enough to give an even finish, but if it is too large it could easily remove too much material on a delicate piece of work.
  • Small files can also be used to create patterns in strips of metal such as fancy bezels.
  • If possible, the piece of metal to be filed should be firmly in a vice with the edge to be filed uppermost.
  • If you are right handed, hold the handle f the file in your right hand. The finger tips of the left hand are placed on the top surface of the file towards the tip.
  • Push the file across your work, using only mild pressure; a well maintained file should do the cutting work for you. The pressure should be exerted evenly with both hands.
  • Do not exert any pressure at all on the backwards stroke; otherwise this will dull the cutting teeth of the file over time.
  • Check progress regularly, files can rapidly remove too much material if due attention is not paid.
  • To create neat corners use flat rectangular files. These will have a smooth 'safety' side so that it will not damage the other side of the corner.
  • In order to maintain a straight edge, ensure that you move the file across the entire length with one even swipe.
