Buying Files

In a general metal workshop, newer files are reserved for quality work; whereas older dulled files will be used for rough work. This is due to the fact that hard metals such as steel will rapidly dull the cutting teeth of a new file. However, a jewellery maker will only be carrying out quality work on expensive, soft metals. It is therefore prudent to invest in the best quality files that can be afforded, and reserve them for jewellery making uses alone.

Many files today are manufactured in China or India, even files from British companies are often re-branded imports from these countries. The teeth on these files are typically dull, clog easily, and wear away rapidly. However, they can be useful for occasional rough work such as cleaning up messy solder.

Even individual files sold in hardware and hobby shops are often of a similar quality to the file sets sold in packets in the pound shop. High quality files should be obtained from a supplier that specialises in products for jewellers, watchmakers, or clockmakers. Swiss files from companies such as Vallorbe are of a high quality, but be prepared to pay a premium for these products. Due to this high price, it can be effective to buy individual files as the need arises. A collection of useful files can be gradually built up in this way, and they will last a lifetime if properly cared for.
