Mallet Types

Mallets should be used in place of hammers when it is important that the metal should not be marked or thinned during the work process.

Wood

The hardwood head can be customised to suit a wide variety of tasks by re-shaping the head as needed.

Rawhide

More durable than a wooden mallet, the head is made of leather that has been tightly rolled and impregnated with shellac. With use the face will deform and soften, this can be rectified by trimming the end of the mallet.

Nylon

Available with a metal head which has replaceable nylon faces to prolong the working life of the tool.

Brass

Brass mallets are commonly used with stamping tools, as a sufficiently sharp blow can still be struck, but it causes less reverberation than a steel hammer would.

Rubber

The hard wearing surface of a rubber mallet can be used for many purposes, including forming, bending, and straightening sheet or wire.
