Barrel Polishing - Types of Barrel

The drums used by barrel polishers are commonly made from either plastic or rubber:

Plastic

Plastic drum lids will be easier to push on and remove if they are left to stand in hot water. Once the lid has been put in place, the entire barrel should be squeezed to remove as much air as possible. Excess air will expand as the machine operates, and can cause leaks.

Rubber

Rubber drums usually have a different lid fitting mechanism, making them easier to open and close. They're both quieter in operation and easier to use than a plastic barrel.

Good quality drums made specifically for polishing jewellery also feature internal vanes which increase the tumbling action, hence reducing the tumbling time.
