First aid - calling the emergency services

Always call the emergency services (999 or 112 in the UK) if someone is seriously injured, and their life is at risk.

Examples of genuine medical emergencies in the workshop include:

  • chest pain
  • breathing difficulty
  • unconsciousness
  • major blood loss
  • severe burns

If the injury is not life threatening, consider other options before calling the emergency services:

  • Talk to your local pharmacist.
  • Visit or call your GP.
  • Call NHS Direct (0845 4647).
  • Go to a local NHS walk-in centre, minor injuries unit or urgent care centre.
  • Call 111 if you live in an area where the service is available.
  • Make your own way to your local A&E department.

N.B. Arriving at A&E in an ambulance does not necessarily mean that you will be treated more quickly.
