Glass fibre scratch brushes are a useful tool for cleaning silver prior to soldering, or to produce a matt surface finish. They are best used dry, as water will cause the fibres to snap easily. The brushes themselves are refillable, and the length of the brush fibres can be adjusted. Longer brush fibres will give a softer effect than short bristles. Some simple precautions should be followed to avoid skin irritation from the fine dust that is produced:
- Use the brush over a smooth, clear surface to make cleaning up easier.
- Wear thin latex gloves, as otherwise the fibres may get lodged in the skin and cause a painful rash.
- Avoid breathing in the dust; glass fibre particles can be a serious health hazard if inhaled.
